The Motorola radio is available in two frequency ranges:

  • VHF (Very High Frequency) — 136–174 MHz

  • UHF (Ultra High Frequency) — 403–527 MHz

The difference between VHF and UHF in the context of this radio (including with AES-256 encryption) is as follows:

🔶 1. Frequency Range

Characteristic VHF UHF
Frequency range 136–174 MHz 403–527 MHz
Wavelength Longer Shorter
Obstacle penetration Worse (walls and obstructions interfere more) Better penetration through walls and buildings
Range in open areas Better (up to 10–15 km in the field) Shorter (up to 5–8 km depending on conditions)

🔶 2. Recommended Use

Scenario Recommended Band
Open areas, rural zones, nature VHF
Urban environments, buildings, dense infrastructure UHF

🔶 3. Compatibility

UHF and VHF are not compatible with each other.
If you already have other radios, it's important that they operate on the same band, otherwise they won't be able to communicate.

🔶 4. Antennas and Size

  • VHF antennas are usually longer.

  • UHF antennas are shorter and more convenient for portable use.

🔐 AES256

The AES256 (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm provides voice and data encryption.
It does not depend on the frequency band — it works the same on both VHF and UHF.

✅ Which One to Choose?

Condition Recommendation
Outdoor use, nature, long-range communication VHF
Indoor use, industrial settings, city UHF
Existing radios in use Choose the same band for compatibility
